La traduction du major d’artillerie belge Jean-Baptiste Neuens (1812-1881) est historiquement la toute première traduction française du Vom Kriege de Clausewitz. Traduction intégrale publiée vingt ans seulement après la mort du stratégiste prussien, et très rapidement épuisée, elle reste la seule à s’appuyer sur la première édition allemande du texte et à éviter ainsi les manipulations que le texte allemand a subi à partir de la deuxième édition.
Cette fidélité à l’oeuvre s’exprime non seulement quant au fond mais aussi quant à la forme. La proximité temporelle entre l’oeuvre originale et sa traduction, ainsi que la culture militaire du traducteur, sont gage d’une meilleure compatibilité lexicale et permettent d’échapper à un certain nombre d’incohérences et d’inexactitudes relevées dans des traductions plus récentes. La qualité du texte de Neuens a été remarquée par tous les spécialistes de Clausewitz, qui en ont loué la précision et la clarté.
Cette réédition le rend enfin accessible au lecteur français.
